Oct 12, -- Thousands of Cuban doctors star in an epic of solidarity every day in the world. Whether in Africa, Asia or Latin America, the work of these health professionals is an example of boundless dedication to save human lives.
The improvement of health indices where Cuban specialists and technicians are present is one of their most tangible results. Their humanism and professionalism is recognized wherever they are sent.
This was expressed by Guatemalan Foreign Minister Fernando Carrera, who said that a 50% reduction in infant mortality in that Central American country over the last 15 years is due to Cuban medical brigades that reach remote places where no one else wants to go.
Cuban medical teams are now to Brazil. The "More doctors" program is a response to the government of Dilma Rousseff and to the claims of the Brazilian people. Rousselffs initiative brings together specialists from various countries and allows medical care to reach 701 Brazilian municipalities.
Under an agreement signed between the Brazil’s Ministry of Health and the Pan-American Health Organization, about 4000 Cuban professional will support the program.
Although the program has generated some controversy, the reality is that over 73% of Brazilians support recruiting Cubans and other foreign doctors.
Specialists in primary health care spend a three-week training course on the Brazilian public health system and also in Portuguese, before taking on their task.
The first Cuban group of medics is already operating in the northern states of Acre, Pará, Amazonas and Tocantins, while a second group is located in the neighborhoods on the outskirts of Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul, in southwest Brazil.
The complete contingent of Cuban doctors is expected to arrive in Brazil by the end of 2013.
