The use of renewable energy sources is a necessity and a challenge of the present aimed at guaranteeing a future for humanity and our planet.  Therefore, Cuba has drawn up a strategy to promote the use of these resources, which is included among the objectives of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.

As an environment-conscious country, Cuba seeks to make the best possible use of its potentialities such as solar, aeolian and biomass energy in the diverse sectors of the Caribbean island's socioeconomic life.

Multiple projects have been launched in collaboration with other nations that will contribute to boost the country's plans to transform its energy matrix.

The global health emergency caused by COVID-19 has not prevented the authorities from continuing to work in this direction.  Thus, in the last few days, Cuba and Germany virtually held a meeting in order to enhance cooperation in this area.  Eight German companies expressed their interest in working in Cuban territory to boost power generation through renewable sources.

The European Union also supports Cuban plans, resulting in the assembly of photovoltaic and wind farms in several areas of the island, with a great social impact and a valuable contribution to the national electricity system.

The European block recognizes the remarkable regional leadership of Cuba in this respect.  The organization's main authorities have pointed out that it is not only a matter of the country's potential, but also of the government's commitment to promoting these sources in order to achieve affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

In order to further cooperation, last March took place the first sectoral dialogue in the energy field in Brussels, in which both parties agreed on the need to foster the use of these resources, to ensure the adaptation process to climate change.

In May 2018, Cuba and the European Union had already signed an energy agreement that prioritized foreign investment and access to cooperation funds.

The Cuban government does not rest on its plans to transform its energy matrix, to achieve its independence in this field and to advance in a sustainable economic development that might consider and looks for the welfare of future generations.
