Cycling Track

Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador and Cuba will take part in the Cuba's Track Cycling Cup from today Wednesday to Saturday in Havana.

The event, a training for Veracruz-2014, will be held at the Havana's Reynaldo Paseiro velodrome, said Jit digital sports magazine, from the Sports Institute of Cuba.

Cuba presents a team led by world multimedalists Lisandra Guerra, Yumari González and Yoanka González, and young international medalists Arlenis Sierra, Marliés Mejías and Yudelmis Domínguez.

Weightlifting

Some 247 athletes from 23 nations are competing at the José Joaquín Puello Sport Pavilion, Parque del Este, Dominican Republic, in the l Continental Weightlifting Championship, where participants seek their qualification for the 2015 Pan-American Games in Toronto, Canada.

The ceremony, attended by the highest local and Olympic executives of the specialty, includes the top regional athletes.

Chess

The GMs Román Hernández and Arián Abreu were appointed as new captains of Cuban chess teams that will compete in the World Championship, scheduled for the Norwegian city of Troms, from August 1st to the 14th.

Román, who is 65 years old, is the 4th player from Cuba to reach the GM title in 1978. He'll lead the female staff, after the resignation of his counterpart Walter Arencibia, who led the team in the 2012 Chess Olympiad, while Arián, of 36, achieved the GM title in 2008 and replaced his pair Reinaldo Vera, who also declined to continue to lead the men's team.

Cuban chess teams must be announced in the course of this week and will be led by GM Leinier Domínguez and Lázaro Bruzón, in the male division, and Lisandra Ordáz and Sulennis Piña, in the female category.

Boxing

The London 2012 Olympic champion Roniel Iglesias, and double world champs in 2011 and 2013, Lázaro Álvarez and Julio César La Cruz, are leading Cuba's Los Domadores squad to face the Baku Fires of Azerbaijan, during the final of the IV World Series of Boxing.

The Cuban technical manager, Rolando Acebal, told Radio Rebelde that the teams will meet on June 6th and 7th in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

The Caribbean team, with 57 wins and only 13 losses throughout the World Series, also includes the flyweight Yosvani Veitia, the best Cuban fighter in the World Series with 7 wins and no losses, the cruise Erislandi Savón (6-0), light welterweight Yasniel Toledo (5-1), the fly Gerardo Cervantes (3-2), the featherweight Norlán Yera (0-1), the bantamweight Arlén López (0-1) and super complete José Ángel Larduet (2-1).
