Buenos Aires, December 30 (RHC) – Argentinean officials have declared a state of emergency in the capital Buenos Aires during a heat wave, which has caused power outages and has sparked public protests.

Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Marci declared a state of ‘Energetic Emergency’ for the capital and announced that a special committee would be created to assess the situation.

The heat wave has reportedly caused the death of three people and the hospitalization of a number of fragile residents.

In addition, hundreds of families have been affected with some who have been without water and power for up to two weeks.

Residents have protested calling on the government and utility companies to take action. The protesters are angered over the condition of the country’s electricity grid, which they say has not been upgraded to cope with situations such as this.

The mayor blamed the power cuts on the Argentinean government for not releasing “transparent information” and “leaving the people abandoned.”

In response, the Argentine government put the blame on the utility companies, Edenor and Edesur, for the power cuts and threatened to nationalize the firms.
