Santiago de Chile, July 29 (RHC)-- A Chilean judge has ordered the re-enactment of the 1974 death of a leftist militant at the hands of the military dictatorship's secret police under Augusto Pinochet.

The court is hearing the case of Miguel Enriquez Espinosa, who was the leader of the Movement of the Revolutionary Left, MIR, and was fatally shot on October 5, 1974, in Santiago's San Miguel neighborhood. The judge moved the trial to a home in the Chilean capital for the re-enactment.

The objective of the court order was to determine whether Enriquez was killed in gunfire with members of the DINA secret police or executed after the battle was over, according to Judge Mario Carroza. Enriquez's former partner, Carmen Castillo and former DINA agent Miguel Krassnoff, who led the operation against the activist participated in the exercise.

Enriquez was shot 10 times during the struggle, which left Castillo wounded. Other MIR fighters who were hiding with Enriquez managed to get away. The plaintiffs in the case say Enriquez was wounded and that the DINA squad entered the home and killed him, rather than take him into custody.

Krassnoff was later taken back to Punta Peuco prison, where he is serving a life sentence on dozens of convictions for his activities during the Pinochet dictatorship. More than 1,250 MIR activists died during the Pinochet government.
