Havana, December 4 (RHC)-- Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has taken to social networks to mourn Fidel Castro who died November 25th in Havana.

Kofi Annan tweeted: ‘Fidel Castro was one of Latin America’s most remarkable leaders’. Annan called Fidel Castro a dear friend, who identified himself with the struggle of African peoples against apartheid.

The former UN chief added: “He inspired the Cuban people to join us in our own struggle against apartheid.

Upon learning of Fidel's death, Annan was among the first African leaders to react with a social media post. He wrote on facebook:

“Today, I mourn the loss of a friend, the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Securing the welfare of the Cuban people and ensuring the independence of his nation shaped much of Fidel Castro’s thinking and many of his actions.

I met Fidel Castro many times over the years and came to appreciate his extraordinary intellect and his ability to engage in constructive dialogue. Farewell Fidel.”
