Moscow, April 20 (RHC)--Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to visit the United States in response to an invitation made by his US counterpart, Donald Trump, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday.

'President Putin is willing to hold that meeting,' Lavrov said in an interview with Ria Novosti, in which he made reference to a telephone conversation between the two leaders last March, when Trump invited the head of the Kremlin to visit the United States, reportsTelesur.

'Since President Trump made the proposal, we hope that he will be more specific” said Lavrov, who was confident that both leaders 'will absolutely not allow an armed confrontation between Russia and the United States.'

On April 14 the United States, the United Kingdom and France launched an air strike against Syria, an ally of Russia in the fight against terrorism. Putin said it was an aggression against a sovereign state and regretted that it was based on the unconfirmed use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Army.

The Russian head of state has insisted on the need for international law to prevail and on the need to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Syria.

Despite tensions between the two countries, the White House spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders, said on April 16 that Trump still wants to sit down to talk with Putin.
