Puerto Rican Teachers Protest Revision of Pension System

San Juan, Oct 10 (RHC)Puerto Rican teachers kicked off a protest action on Wednesday after the government of that US colony announced the revision of the system of pensions.

Union leader Maria Elena Lara said that the government revision would lead to a lower teachers’ monthly pensions to 800 or 900 dollars, standing for up to 50 percent, she said.

The teachers say that if the review is carried out and reforms adopted future pensions will be funded with the salaries of active teachers, since the state contribution would be totally cut.

The Puerto Rican Pension system had on its lists 43 thousand 402 active teachers and 35 thousand 361 retired professionals up to last June, according to the Teachers’ Union.
