Santiago de Chile, March 5 (RHC)-- In Chile, the daughter of former President Salvador Allende is poised to become the first female leader of the Senate. Senator Isabel Allende will take up the post next week after she was selected by lawmakers from the party of President-elect Michelle Bachelet.

Isabel Allende’s father also led the Senate before he was elected president in 1970. He was overthrown in a bloody U.S.-backed military coup on September 11, 1973 and died resisting fascist forces led by Army General Augusto Pinochet.
