San Salvador, March 14 (RHC) -- El Salvador's Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has confirmed ruling party candidate Salvador Sanchez Ceren won in the second-round presidential elections held Sunday.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the court said the ruling Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) won the run-off with 50.11 percent of the votes, or 1,495,815 votes, while the rival conservative National Republican Alliance (ARENA) garnered 49.89 percent of the votes, or 1,489,451 votes.

Given the close race, Sanchez, who currently serves as vice president, called for unity in an address later in the day.

"Together let's build a more inclusive, more developed country, where we can have a decent home and life for all.” Sanchez will be sworn in as the next president of El Salvador on June 1st.
