Islamabad, October 17 (RHC)-- An airstrike carried out by a U.S. assassination drone has killed two people in the province of Nuristan in eastern Afghanistan, which borders Pakistan.

Afghan officials said the airstrike took place on Wednesday in the Waygal area of Nuristan. They claimed that the victims were Taliban militants, but the group has yet to comment on the news.

The attack was the 50th drone strike in Nuristan since the beginning of this year. Washington has increasingly turned to unmanned aircraft to carry out covert strikes in several countries, such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia.

The United States says the CIA-run drone strikes primarily kill Taliban militants who threaten the U.S.-led occupation forces in Afghanistan, although casualty figures show that civilians are often the victims of the non-UN-sanctioned attacks.

Washington and its allies entered the war in Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but after 12 years, the foreign troops have still not been able to establish security in the country.
