Venezuelan Parliament Proposes Bill to Ban GM Foods

Caracas, October 25 (RHC) -- Venezuela's National Assembly prepares a draft bill that would ban the production and consumption of GM foods in the country. The legislation will go first through a public consultation with the productive sector and then will be submitted for discussion to parliament.

The Minister of Agriculture and Lands, Yvan Gil, said Thursday that the draft Seed Law "ensures the participation of peasants in food production strategies" and offers a "legal framework to defend farmers against predatory transnational companies."

He emphasized that the initiative has the full backing of the government, adding that in Venezuela has a strong position and structured legislation on topic of GM foods for its many implications on human and environmental health.

The national debate on the draft law will begin next Octber 28, said the second vice president of the Parliament, deputy Blanca Eekhout.
