Afghanistan's Opium Poppy Crop Hits Record High, Despite $7 Billion in U.S. Funds

Kabul, November 20 (RHC)-- The cultivation of opium poppies in Afghanistan reached an all-time high last year, despite more than $7 billion in U.S. funds to combat the drug trade.

In a recent report, the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction, John Sopko, said the record levels "[call] into question the long-term effectiveness and sustainability" of U.S. efforts.
