Tegucigalpa, December 3 (teleSUR-RHC)-- A delegation from the Inter-American Human Rights Court visits Honduras this week, looking into reports that impunity for criminal cases has reached the rate of 96 percent. Impunity in the case of human rights trials is reportedly even worse, at 98 percent.

From 2010 to 2013, 27,272 homicides were reported in Honduras, but only 1,009 cases resulted in court convictions.

Wilfredo Mendez of the Center for the Protection of Human Rights said: “Reports like this present a level of impunity higher than 90 percent, and this information is backed by the OAS (the Organization of American States) and the United Nations.”

The Inter-American Court’s delegation, which has already traveled to several cities in the country to gather more information, is particularly interested in the situation on the Atlantic coast as well as San Pedro Sula, the second most violent of the country after Tegucigalpa and one of the top five of the continent. They are also investigating the situation in the city of Tocoa in the heart of the Aguan Valley. For more than five years, Tocoa has seen violent confrontations between farmers and armed landowners, who are supported by the military.
