Bogota, July 20 (RHC) -- The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia(FARC) militias official declared today a unilateral ceasefire in their conflict with the Colombian government. The truce seeks to create favorable context for further progress in the peace talks underway in Havana.
In return, the Colombian government has promised to reciprocate the gesture and act decisively in terms of de-escalating hostilities, in a clear step towards the materialization of a bilateral and definitive cease-fire.
“We came to Cuba to reach a peace agreement to end a war of more than 50 years. Nothing could please us more than a definitive end of the confrontation and suffering of the Colombian people for this conflict, said the head of the rebel delegation to the talks,” Ivan Marquez.
The representatives of the insurgent forces at the negotiations table met in Havana on Saturday with organizations that will verify the unilateral ceasefire.
