Possible Second Round in Guatemalan Presidential Elections

Guatemala City, September 7 (PL-RHC)-- The voting trend in Guatemala points towards a second round to elect the president of the 2016-2020 term, according to preliminary results published on Monday, after the processing the 64.68 percent of the polling stations.

According to preliminary information, Jimmy Morales has guaranteed his place in the second round, scheduled for October 25th, but it is still unknown if his rival will be Manuel Baldizón or Sandra Torres.

The president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE acronym in Spanish), Rudy Pineda, called on citizens to stay calm and wait for the final results, which are going to be known after a verification process and appeal.

Morales, from the National Convergence Front, has 849 712 votes in favor, equivalent to the 26.64 percent of the total recorded, followed by Baldizón, from Lider, with 570 273 votes (17, 88 percent). Sandra Torres of the National Unity of Hope, is in third place with 538 946 favorable votes (16.89).

According to the updated report, 3 189 985 valid ballots were counted, 157 345 blank, 131 288 null and 1777 challenged.

Pineda convened the third press conference on Monday to give more details on the amount obtained by the ones aspiring for a position elected by the people.
