Córdoba, December 5 (RHC) – Looters in Argentina’s second largest city, Córdoba, have ransacked shops and supermarkets in riots that left one person dead and many more injured.

Television footage showed looters, some on motorcycles, breaking into dozens of supermarkets and shops and stealing goods from food and beverages to flat-screen TVs in events that started late on Tuesday and extended into Wednesday.

The mass looting and vandalism started after thousands of police forces refused to patrol the city streets in demand for higher pay and better working conditions.

A 20-year-old man died from a gunshot wound to his chest, while 100 others were wounded in the incidents. Provincial governor, Jose Manuel de la Sota, said 52 people have been arrested.

On Wednesday, de la Sota said police agreed to end their strike. He said a deal was reached after a three-hour meeting with police officials.

The province of Córdoba has faced repeated delays and cutbacks in financing from the federal government, which have caused continuous social and political unrest plus financial challenges.
