Guatemala City, March 8 (RHC)-- The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) is demanding that Guatemalan authorities release one of its members, Julia Amparo Lotan Garzona, who has been detained for over nine months on what it says are groundless charges.

According to the WFTU, Lotan Garzona is being detained for political reasons, instigated by the administration of Otto Perez Molina, the former president who was ousted last year for corruption.

Lotan Garzona was an outspoken critic of the former Guatemalan president, protesting his administration, defending the workers' struggle and fighting against corruption and impunity.
