Brazilian President Unveils 6.8 Percent Minimum Wage Hike

Brasilia, December 24 (RHC) -- President Dilma Rousseff announced Monday that the monthly minimum wage will be raised to 724 Brazilian reals (306 U.S. dollars) starting next month, reflecting a 6.8-percent increase.

In a message via Twitter, Rousseff said she has signed the measure into law after it was approved by Congress last week as part of the 2014 budget, and it is in accordance with the country's GDP growth and inflation-adjusted.

The move is expected to inject an additional 46 billion reals (20 billion dollars) into the Brazilian economy in 2014.
