Santo Doming, August 1 (RHC)-- The 8th Hemispheric Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba concluded over the weekend in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic with a call for unity issued by Hero of the Republic of Cuba Fernando González.

González, one of the Cuban Five, who now serves as vice president of the Havana-based Institute of friendship with the peoples (ICAP), presided over the Cuban delegation to the solidarity event.

Addressing the meeting, he spoke about the current process towards the normalization of relations with the United States, and about the role Cuban revolution leader Fidel Castro has played towards unity among all Latin American and Caribbean nations and peoples.

Fernando González called on those present to strengthen that unity against attempts to overthrow and destroy progressive governments and movements in countries like Brazil, Ecuador and Bolivia.
