Havana, August 8 (RHC)-- Cuba's Meteorology Institute (INSMET) and Panama's Electricity Transmission Company S.A. have signed an agreement for scientific and technical cooperation on climate issues.

The documents were signed in Havana by Celso Pazos, head of INSMET, and Edilberto Bolívar Esquivel, Panamanian director of Hydro-meteorology. It provides for joint feasibility studies on variability and climate forecasting to develop new applications for health, energy and food safety.

Esquivel, who serves as Panama's Permanent Representative before the World Meteorological Organization, highlighted Cuba's scientific potential. He said that his country is particularly interested in further learning from the Cuban experience and working jointly towards increasing both nations' capabilities in economically productive activities.

The head of the Cuban Meteorology Institute mentioned the development of educational and research programs at the international level as another objective of the signed agreement, along with quality control and management of hydro-meteorological variables.
