Havana, January 10 (RHC)-- Cuba has reiterated that the U.S. government must abolish the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act as a first step to reach a legal, safe and orderly migratory flow between the two countries.

The Cuban delegation to a round of migration talks with the United States on Thursday warned that illegal migration and the smuggling of migrants cannot be eradicated till Washington abolishes its 'dry-foot-wet-foot' policy and the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act.

In a press release, the Havana delegation said the Cuban Adjustment Act encourages illegal departures from the island and irregular arrivals by Cuban citizens in the United States. This law allows Cubans who make it to the U.S., no matter how they do it, to stay in that country, while those who are intercepted on the high seas are returned to Cuba.

The U.S. and the Cuban delegation to the round of talks were presided over by the assistant undersecretary for Western Hemispheric Affairs with the U.S. State Department Edward Alex Lee, and the general director for the United States at the Cuban Foreign Ministry Josefina Vidal.

The Cuban delegation offered an update on the implementation of new migration regulations and the accords signed with other countries of the region.
