Punta Cana, January 26 (RHC)-- The participating regional heads of state and government attending the 5th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic, passed a special declaration calling on the U.S. government to put an end to the economic, commercial and financial Blockade of Cuba.

The Declaration calls on the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to listen to the claim of the vast majority of the international community and fulfill the 25 successive resolutions on the issue adopted by the United Nations General Assembly since 1992.

In the text, one of 20 special declarations approved Wednesday at the closing session of the 5th CELAC Summit, the participating regional leaders reaffirmed their rejection of economic coercive measures that contravene International Law.

The declaration blasts specifically unilateral sanctions imposed on sovereign countries for political reasons that hamper the well-being of their peoples and are designed to prevent them from exercising their right to decide, their political, economic and social systems by their own free will.

In that sense, the regional leaders urged U.S. President Donald Trump to take all actions within his executive powers to substantially modify the application of the blockade. They also called on the U.S. Congress to completely repeal the genocidal policy, which they charge runs contrary to the principles of the United Nations Charter and International Law.
