Cienfuegos, March 23 (RHC)-- Visiting Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Technical Cooperation Department Dazhu Yang inaugurated Wednesday the Caribbean Regional Ocean Acidification Observatory in the Cuban province of Cienfuegos.

In his opening remarks, Yang described the opening of the new facility as “an important event,” noting that the International Atomic Energy Agency “is a member of the United Nations family”. Founded in 1957, the IAEA works with UN member states to promote the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. He mentioned environmental protection as one of the most important cooperation areas.

The UN official praised Cuba's efforts toward environmental protection.

He said: “I know that there are many capable scientists working on their own national projects in this field, and our organization – through its technical cooperation efforts – has supported this commitment, and I am very pleased to learn that our support has been useful and has contributed to these efforts.”

Cuban expert Alain Muñoz Caravaca noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency has maintained cooperation ties with the Cienfuegos Environmental Research Center for the past 15 years. He added that the new Observatory, based at the Faro Luna International Diving Center, “is an expression of the fruitful cooperation between the IAEA and Cuba.”
