Havana, Nov 26 (rhc/pl) We are making a vow for the Homeland, the Revolution and socialism, assured today the first Cuban Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel, after voting in the Sunday elections for delegates to the Municipal Assemblies of the People's Power.

After exercising his right to vote in the district where he lives, the Vice President told the press that participating in the elections is an expression of the way in which Cuban democracy is exercised.

Díaz-Canel highlighted the humble origin and modesty of the proposed candidates and pointed out that they are working people and the peoples' representatives.

These persons were elected and nominated by the people, not proposed by any party, or campaign, he added.

Diaz Canel, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, recalled that the election takes place one day after the first anniversary of the physical disappearance of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.

In this regard, he considered that people go to the polls in Cuba not only to exercise a right as citizens, but also for Fidel Castro and the Revolution.

We are conveying a message to the world of a united people convinced of their destiny and showing they do not submit themselves even to the problems caused by a hurricane, he emphasized. The National Electoral Commission (CEN) noted that for this first round of elections for delegates to the municipal assemblies more than 24,300 polling stations were opened. More than eight million Cubans are summoned to the polls to elect the delegates of the 12, 515 districts of the country.

Of the 27,221 candidates, women make up 35.40 percent, while young people, 19.49.

For December 3 is scheduled the runoff vote in those constituencies in which none of the candidates obtains more than half of the valid votes.
