Havana, March 7 (RHC)-- Cuban President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, congratulated women of the island in the context of International Women's Day, celebrated every March 8.

The Cuban leader took to his Twitter account to praise Cuban women, describing them as 'friends, companions, heroines of the resistance, creators and  illuminators of life.'

International Women's Day was established on March 8, 1975 by the United Nations, in recognition of women's rights and world peace.

This year in Cuba the day is coinciding with the closing of the 10th Congress of the Federation of Cuban Women, an organization with over 4 million members dedicated to promoting the advancement of women and gender equality.
