Havana, June 14 (RHC)-- The vice president of the Cuban Association of the Physically Disabled (ACLIFIM) María de los Ángeles Ávila, praised the political will of the Cuban government in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.

In remarks to Prensa Latina news agency, Avila explained that even though there is still work to be done, Cuba continues to be an example because of the progress accomplished for the disabled in 60 years of the Revolution.

In that sense, she described as historic the ACLIFIM´s 6th congress that is ending  this Friday in Havana.

Avila noted, however, that people with disabilities on the island are still advocating for actions to raise awareness in society about the protection of their rights.

'Accessibility is still an issue that needs to be worked on; It is also necessary to make reasonable adjustments in workplaces to provide employment',  she added.

Avila said that there are ideal conditions in Cuba to increase the participation of disabled persons in areas related to employment, sports and culture.

The vice president of the NGO praised Cuba´s adherence to the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and commended the inclusion in the recently approved Constitution of the safeguarding of the rights of the disabled, as full members of the Cuban society.
