Havana, February 6 (RHC)-- Cuba's National Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC) strongly rejected on Wednesday an attempt by some European lawmakers to disqualify the sovereign Cuban model and also demanded respect for the island's culture and people.

In a message to the promoters of the event, UNEAC stated that their only purpose was to align themselves with the ongoing US campaign to discredit Cuba and undermining its relations with the European Union.

The event was headed by the Spanish MEP Jose Ramon Bauza and set up by the non-governmental organization 'Civil Right Defenders.'

UNEAC warned that "those bent on conveying fabrications on Cuba to European parliamentarians and politicians are, in fact, those who yield to dictates imposed on them from abroad and who receive funds that encourage their shameless actions."
