Havana, August 20 (RHC)-- The president of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP), Esteban Lazo Hernández, led the Cuban delegation in the first part of the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized virtually by the Inter-Parliamentary Union, with the cooperation of the Austrian Parliament and the United Nations.

The event was attended by 150 world leaders of such institutions, other legislators, experts and UN representatives, who discussed the mobilization of the international parliamentary community in the face of the health, climate and economic crises that the peoples and the planet are facing.

The topics discussed were health, climate and economy; the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, as well as the relationship between science, technology and ethics, in order to find urgent solutions to the new global challenges, reports the Cuban News Agency.

The conference adopted a final declaration based on the reports submitted by the nations that defend an effective multilateral strategy at the service of peace and sustainable development, and agreed to hold the second part of the exchange in 2021 in Vienna, Austria, in its usual face-to-face form.

Cuba has been a member of this organization since 1977 and 24 years later held Chapter 105 of the World Conference, at whose plenary session, on April 5, 2001, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz spoke.
