Havana, October 7 (RHC) -– Digital TV has reached Cuba's 15 provincial capitals and is also present in other large urban areas across the country, government authorities cited by Xinhua news agency said.

The report says that the current coverage of digital TV reaches nearly five million people.

Total investment for the implementation of digital TV in the country reached 10.5 million CUC. The implementation of digital TV in Cuba started in 2013 when tests were performed successfully in Havana using the Chinese Digital Terrestrial Broadcast (DTMB) standard with equipment donated by the Chinese government. The trial involved a total of 45,000 homes in the city, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the Cuban government expects to start production of locally made decoders for digital TV during 2015. It has been announced that by the year 2021, the analog signal will be switched off throughout Cuba.

According to local media, the factory which will manufacture the decoders will be finished in the short term. The facility is expected to have a production capacity of up to 300,000 decoders.
