Baracoa, (RHC-PL) May 15 -- The Alejandro de Humbolt National Park, a World Heritage Site, is one of the world's best conserved natural reserves, according to Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) experts.

About 24 percent of worldwide flora species can be found here and the park has the greatest vegetable diversity in Cuba and the insular Caribbean, CITMA's Alejandro de Humboldt Environmental Services Unit technical deputy director Gerardo Begué told Prensa Latina.

Located at the heart of the Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve, at the easternmost tip of the island, its preservation state and endemic species place it at the top of the world's reserves, he said.

The Park is Cuba's best conserved ecosystem and, besides its exceptional beauty, represents one of the most valuable sites for endemic flora conservation in the Western Hemisphere, Begué explained.

Another peculiarity is that it is the habitat of three of the smallest species of vertebrates in the planet, while 90 percent of Cuba's world records regarding fauna size can be found there.
