A New Solar Energy Park to be Built

Havana, November 21 (RHC)— A photo-voltaic park, the first one in Cuba’s western-most province of Pinar del Rio, will begin to be set up in 2014 and progressively start contributing energy to the provincial power grid.

The solar installation will render initially some two and a half megawatts to the province’s consumers but will be able to reach 15 megawatts when concluded.

The big advantage of photovoltaic parks is that they don’t burn fossil fuels that add to atmospheric contamination. Their disadvantage, of course, is that they don’t generate power in the dark, when it is necessary to rely on fuel-burning generators.

Master in Sciences Efrén Espinosa, who leads the installing team, said the new grid is one more step in efforts in Cuba to further reduce its contribution to global warming.

The new solar park is part of a project covering the installation and expansion of several other such grids in Cuba that will take advantage of a most reliable power source in our area: the Sun.

Cuba’s largest solar energy park was recently inaugurated in the central province of Cienfuegos, with a capacity of 2 point 6 megawatts.
