Havana, November 25 (RHC)-- Millions of Cubans participated over the weekend in military exercises to boost skills and preparedness for any possible attack to the nation. The National Days of Defense followed the country-wide military exercise named Bastion, held earlier in the week.

Television reports showed civilians Pinar del Rio province throwing grenades, mastering military communication techniques and protecting women, children and the aged against enemy weapons of mass destruction.

In Matanzas province, naval action expelled potential invaders and re-established control over areas where they had landed.

In eastern Cuba, television reports showed troops led by Three-star General Ramon Espinosa involved in destroying attempted invaders.

In statements Sunday night after the conclusion of the two-day Bastion nation-wide military exercise, President Raul Castro said that Cuba has to permanently update its defensive military tactics and methods, in order to be ready to effectively protect the country from any foreign aggression.

The key to success, he said, is the involvement of all of society for the defense of the nation, and is in guaranteeing each citizen the means, the place and the way to defend his homeland.
