Washington, September 12 (RHC)-- The Cuban flag that was stored in a room of the Cuban embassy in Washington D.C. and hoisted during the official opening of that facility, will be returned to eastern Las Tunas province where it was treasured for years.

The flag was originally donated to Las Tunas by a great-grand child of Cuban Independence Major General Vicente Garcia in 1997. According to the secretary of Las Tunas local government Noel Nuñez, the flag will be returned and a solemn ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 13th.

Later, the flag will be displayed for several days inside a glass urn and finally taken to the Major General Vicente Garcia Revolution Square where it will be definitively kept.

The flag was lowered from its mast by worker Garcia Soto, an employee at the Cuban embassy, on January 3, 1961 when the U.S. unilaterally broke relations with Cuba. The man kept the flag at his residence in the U.S. state of Florida for years until he visited the island and donated it to the patrimonial office.
