Cuban Workers Return Home After Assisting Storm Victims in Dominica

Havana, October 14 (RHC)-- The brigade of medical doctors, epidemiologists, nurses, construction and electric engineers that assisted the victims of Tropical Storm Erika in Dominica returned home on Wednesday after having fulfilled their humanitarian mission.

The members of the Henry Reeve Medical Brigade stayed for six weeks in the Caribbean sister island, helping victims in disaster areas. The group, which joined another 11 doctors who were already working in Dominica, also focused their mission on the strengthening of primary health care at medical centers and in the promotion of good health.

Doctor Norberto Ramos, who headed the medical group, told ACN about the situation they found in the aftermath of Erika, including landslides that isolated towns, destroyed thoroughfares and infrastructure, with collapsed bridges and severely damaged airport facilities.

The Cuban brigade took 1.2 tons of medications and other resources with it to assist the victims of the storm.

The Henry Reeve Brigade, specialized in the fight against epidemics in disaster situations, return home satisfied of their work in Dominica, as some of its members took part in the contingent that fought Ebola in West Africa and assisted earthquake victims in Nepal and Chile.
