Geneva, October 21 (RHC-PL) -- Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), says the Cuban health system is an example to follow for its sustainability and capacity to act in emergency situations.

During her appearance at the plenary session of the 133rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) that continues in Geneva, Chan stressed the solidarity spirit of the Caribbean nation, especially in terms of training health staff of Third World countries. She also expressed her gratitude to Cuba for the important role played in fighting the Ebola epidemic in West African countries.

The mention of Cuba occurred during the interactive exchange held by the parliamentary delegations with Chan in the context of the general debate of the event, dedicated to the theme of migration.

In this regard, she stressed the importance of the role of parliaments as a mobilizing force of the governments' political will, to ensure health care for migrants, whose uprooting situation puts them in a very vulnerable reality.

Yolanda Ferrer, head of the Cuban delegation to the IPU meeting, said it was a privilege for those attending the event to hear the voice of the World Health Organization, a group with which the island has had the opportunity to work in confronting health emergency situations.
