Havana, December 9 (RHC)-- The international community is supporting the cause of the Cuban anti-terrorist fighters jailed in the United States by posting messages on the website http://voicesforthefive.com/. To date, over 2,000 messages of solidarity with the Cuban heroes have been posted.
Gerardo Hernández, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez, internationally known as the Cuban Five, were arrested in Miami in 1998 and given unfair sentences in 2001 after they monitored Florida-based violent organizations that planned terrorist actions against Cuba.
Only Rene Gonzalez has been able to return to Cuba after he served his prison sentence and renounced his U.S. citizenship in exchange for the modification of his parole.
U.S. actor Martin Sheen posted a message reading: “I have supported the Cuban Five’s quest for freedom for several years now, and I will continue to do so... for the simple fact that the Five were on a mission to save lives. They only had their eyes and ears to monitor extremist organizations and thwart their plots.
Award winning Serbian director Emir Kusturica also has added his message of support for the Five.
Also on the page is a message by Che Guevara’s daughter Aleida Guevara which reads: “Freedom is a right that we demand for our comrades. They are anti-terrorist fighters and heroes of a nation that respects life and affirms solidarity. They represent the best of my people, and therefore must return.”
The solidarity campaign with the Cuban Five will set up an international investigation commission on the case in March 2014 at London’s Law Society to step up efforts to achieve the release of the four Cuban heroes still in U.S. prisons. The panel of lawyers will consider all the evidence in the case including the testimony of Rene Gonzalez, and other relatives of the Cuban anti-terrorists.
