Cuban Revolutionary Leader Pedro Miret Dies in Havana

Havana, January 16 (RHC-PL) -- Cuban revolutionary leader Pedro Miret died in Havana on Friday at the age of 88. He was among the revolutionary fighters who stormed the Moncada Garrison in July 1953.

Miret served as a member of the National Directorate of the July 26th Movement since its inception in 1955. He later joined the Rebel Army under the command of Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra mountains in March 1958 and reached the rank of Major in December of that year.

After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, he held important positions within the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, including first vice minister, and head of artillery, and participated in the battle of Playa Giron, also known as the Bay of Pigs.

He also held various ministerial positions, and was Vice President of the Council of Ministers from 1983 until 2009. He was an elected member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) since its establishment in 1965, and was a also deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power, since its creation in 1976.

Miret joined the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party from its First Congress, in 1975, up to the Fourth Congress in 1991 and was elected to the Central Committee Secretariat in the First and Second Congresses.

Pedro Miret was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations in honor of his loyalty and revolutionary contribution, including that of “Hero of the Republic of Cuba.”
