Caracas, December 17 (RHC)-- Representatives of the member nations of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of Our America, or ALBA, opened the Twelfth Political Council of the block, a first step prior to the Summit scheduled for this Tuesday.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua, in a speech to open the session, recalled that nine years ago Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez jointly decided to establish ALBA , aimed at countering U.S. inspired annexation efforts of the Free Trade Area of the Americas.
The ALBA meeting starting today in Caracas includes in its agenda a proposal to create the University of Sciences for Health. The meeting will also revise the coordination mechanisms between the Alliance and Petrocaribe.
Successes achieved by ALBA in preventing a military attack against Syria and its solidarity with the Buenos Aires Government in its demand that Britain return the Malvinas islands to their legitimate owner, Argentina, were listed by the Venezuelan Foreign Minister.
ALBA is supporting efforts to boost national actions by its member states to promote efficient productive outputs leading to improved social and economic environments capable to fully eradicate hunger and poverty.
The meeting will also remember the Liberator of many South American nations, Simón Bolivar, on the 183rd anniversary of his death.
