Havana, December 23 (RHC)-- As he addressed the country’s epidemiological and hygienic situation at the recent second session of the Cuban Parliament, Cuban Health Minister Roberto Morales called for the reinforcement of actions to control all diseases that could potentially affect the Cuban people.

The health minister stressed the importance of sanitary activities and vector control to counter the risks posed by Cuba's geographical and climate conditions, as well as the importance of emerging diseases at the international level.

Morales pointed to the risks and difficulties in Cuba, including the deterioration of sewage and water-supply networks, the low quality of drinking water in some regions and weak sanitation measures in others. The minister sent out an alert as to the low levels of public awareness of these risks.

He said that at present Cuba has 56,0600 doctors, without taking into account over 21,000 of them currently working in other countries of the world.
