7th ACS Summit Concludes with Signing of Havana Declaration

Havana, June 4 (RHC)-- The 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) concluded over the weekend in Havana with the approval of the Havana Declaration, which includes a special communiqué in support of the Bolivarian government of Venezuela.

In it, the ACS leaders reaffirm the provisions of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace and express their strong support for the dialogue efforts promoted by the government of President Nicolás Maduro with the support of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the former Presidents José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of Spain, Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Republic and Martín Torrijos of Panama.

In their communique, the ACS leaders recognize that the reopening of an effective dialogue between the Venezuelan government and the opposition, is the best and only way to encourage political stability, social development and economic recovery of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Also included in the Havana Declaration is a call on the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia to not abandon the negotiating table until a peace deal is finally signed that puts an end to over 50 years of internal conflict in the South American country.

The head of the Colombian delegation at the ACS Summit, the country's Foreign Minister María Ángela Holguín thanked Cuba for its support over the past four years to peace efforts in Colombia.

While the Caribbean leaders applauded the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, they urged Washington to lift its over 50 year-old blockade against Cuba and to return the portion of Cuban territory illegally occupied by the U.S. Naval Base at Guantánamo.
