National Assembly of Ecuador Passes Resolution in Favor of the Cuban Five’s Release

Quito, Oct. 1 (RHC)—The National Assembly of Ecuador passed a resolution in favor of the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly incarcerated in the United States since 1998.

The resolution, approved by the Ecuadorian legislators, urges US President Barack Obama to use his executive powers to free the five Cuban men, thus putting an end to the colossal injustice being committed against them.

The documents states that the 2001 ruling by the Miami jury against René González, Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González and Antonio Guerrero clearly violated US and international law and regulations on the issues of terrorism and human rights.

The resolution, which will be sent to both, Washington and the US ambassador in Quito, considers that the Cuban five’s case should be resolved based on purely legal matters, letting aside the long-standing ideological and political differences between Washington and Havana.

The Ecuadorian legislators also urged Obama to take into consideration the ever-growing international solidarity campaign that demands freedom for the Five, the countless petitions for their release by governments, parliaments, prestigious institutions and world personalities, and the human rights situation of the five men, who in some cases have even been deprived of their right to have family visits.
