Timba from Cuba in New York
World known Cuban bands, including Grammy Award winning Los Van Van, plus NG La Banda and Manolito Simonet y su Trabuco, performed in New York on June 16 at the First Cuban Timba Festival.
The Copacabana night club also hosted other popular Cuban bands, such as the groups Bamboleo and Pupy y los que Son Son, as well as singers Tania Pantoja and Pedrito Calvo. Cuban musician Lázaro Valdez headed the island’s delegation known as Team Cuba.
Experts say that composer, arranger and director Jose Luis Cortes and his band NG la Banda performed the Cuban Timba for the first time in November, 1989, establishing a new musical concept, style and sound.
