Cuba Works to Prevent Fires

Havana, February 21 (RHC) -- The Corps of Cuban Forest Rangers has taken several actions to prevent the occurrence and spreading of forest fires across the country.

Cuba's national campaign against forest fires takes place from January 1st to May 31st, a period that is considered the most dangerous due to adverse conditions.

Specialists working with the Corps of the Forest Rangers told the Cuban newspaper Juventud Rebelde that the priority is prevention, so they focus on staff training, cohesion of working groups and promotion. The forest rangers urge all landowners to build fire trails and green belts, and encourage them to maintain roads to halt the flames.

In 2011, Cuba reported more than 20,000 hectares damaged, direct losses of about 22 million pesos, and a record of 695 fires in the first five months of the year, accounting for 96 percent of the fires during the entire year.
