U.S. Documentary Shorts Program to Be Shown in Cuba

Holguin, March 31 (RHC) -- Poster Girl, a documentary film about a U.S. American girl who suffered posttraumatic stress disorder after returning home from the Iraq War, is one of the five U.S. short-films to be screened in Holguin, Cuba, as part of a program organized by America’s Media Initiative (AMI) and the Museum of Modern Art, of New York.

Nominated to the 2011 Academy Award, Poster Girl tells the true story of Robynn Murray, a typical American cheerleader who was sent to Iraq after having enlisted in the U.S. army. Upon returning home Murray fell into an abyss as a result of the tough reality lived in Iraq.

Murray’s is one of five true stories told in the shorts all by independent filmmakers and screened as part of a travelling program between the U.S. and Cuba that has been already shown in Cienfuegos and Camagüey.

AMI’s director Alexandra Halkin told Cuban News Agency that the project, called Closing Distances serves to bring the two peoples closer by showing real situations and stories.

The shorts show fissures in the U.S. society which are avoided by Hollywood productions and the mainstream media.
