Cuba to Share Experiences in Disaster Reduction

Havana, April 5 (RHC) The Cuban National Civil Defence will organize an international meeting in May to share the experiences of five decades in confronting disasters and mitigating their effects, spokeswoman Maida Millan announced on Wednesday.

In statements to the website Cubadefensa, recently launched by the Ministry of the Armed Forces, the spokeswoman pointed out that the forum will be held in Havana from May 18th to 20th.

According to Millan, the meeting will conclude with the drills Meteor 2012, carried out every year in Cuba to update the system designed to prevent the loss of lives and to protect resources from bad weather conditions and other threats.

Millan explained that the international event is part of the activities scheduled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cuba’s Civil Defence. Meetings with experts, the publication of a magazine and the release of a postage stamp are other activities planned for the celebration, she said. In addition, a monument to the Cuban people for their solidarity in disaster situations will be built.
