Fidel Castro: Stevenson Has Left us
Havana, June 12 (RHC)—Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro dedicated his most recent reflections to World and three times Olympic Boxing Champ Teofilo Stevenson, whose sudden death, at 60, from a heart attack on Monday shocked the Cuban people and many around the world, for whom the outstanding athlete, already in retirement, was a symbol of Cuban sports.
Stevenson has left us, says Fidel Castro in his reflections, published June 12 on Cubadebate website, and he explains that after four p.m. on Monday the news arrived that Stevenson had passed away.
The Cuban leader stresses that no other amateur boxer was as brilliant as Stevenson in the history of boxing. Had it not been for the duties imposed on the Cuban Revolution by its internationalist principles, he could have taken another two world titles, says Fidel and concludes that no money in the world would have ever served to bribe Stevenson.
