Havana, Feb 23 (ACN-RHC) The creation of a gasifier that uses wood waste to power a 40-Kw energy generator is expected to eventually bring significant energy-conserving carriers to the country, while protecting the environment.

According to Angel Recio, professor of the Center for the Energy Efficiency Studies of the University of Oriente said the plant, installed at the Forestal Integral Gran Piedra Baconao company, a forest management enterprise, as part of the Biomasa-Cuba Project, is the first one of its type to be used in Cuba for industrial use. Produced at a very low cost, the gas generator will make it possible to save an estimated 2,800 tons of oil required by a 40-Kw power plant to operate in a year, which can produce enough energy to supply more than 100 homes, says Granma newspaper.

In this case, the technology will contribute to stabilizing the voltage in the area which becomes unstable during peak hours, when high-consuming equipments used by the enterprise are on. A specialist on efficient energy use, Amarilys Gilart Viant, said the gas generator consumes 60 Kg of sawdust and woodchips per hour. Gilart Viant explained that sawmills in the area annually generate thousands of cubic meters of wood wastes which, if thrown away, would cause negative effects on the flora, fauna and the people of the area.
