Washington Wants to Open Military Base in Paraguay
Havana, Aug 16 (RHC)- A group of 21 US generals held a meeting with the National Defense, Security and Interior Order Commission at Paraguay´s Chamber of Deputies to propose US participation in the setting up of a military base in the Chaco region, in the South American country.
Commission president Jose Lopez Chavez, from the UNACE party publicly favored the setting up of the military base with the aim of “getting rid of Bolivian pressure and threat on that region, ” la Radio del Sur reported.
Marco Ibañez, from the People´s Social Front, told La Radio del Sur that the left-wing organization rejects any attempt to open a US military base in the country. Defense Minister Luis Catalino Roig discarded any possibility that Washington could set up any military facility in Paraguay, because it would constitute a violation of the country´s constitution.
Ibañez said that Washington´s interest in such a military base would mainly focus on the oil findings in the western Chaco region and their desire to control the Guarani aquifer, one of the world´s major water reserves.
