Venezuelan President Travels to Cuba and Undergo Surgery

Caracas, February 24 (RHC) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez travelled to Havana on Friday afternoon to undergo another operation, probably on Monday or Tuesday.  In recent days, Cuban doctors detected a lesion in the pelvic region where he had a cancerous tumor removed in June last year.

During a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday in Caracas, which was broadcast on national radio and television, Chavez said he will have a pre-operative check-up over the weekend before surgery early next week.

Also on Thursday, the Venezuelan statesman attended a ceremony of support for his candidacy for reelection, when he promised to fight tirelessly and relentlessly for his health, with the support of the people, science, love and his wish to live.

Venezuela’s National Assembly unanimously approved on Thursday the permission requested by President Chavez to leave the country, an essential requirement for the head of State to travel abroad for more than five days, as established by the Constitution.
